Common Coverage Questions
Policy Exclusions
Many losses are excluded by standard policies. Earthquake, flood, and maintenance issues require special coverage.
Sudden vs. Gradual
Insurance covers "sudden and accidental" damage. Gradual deterioration is usually excluded.
Burden of Proof
You must prove the loss was sudden, accidental, and from a covered peril under your policy.
General Claim Timeline: What to Expect
Understanding the general claim process helps you protect your rights at every stage.
Within 24 Hours: Report & Document
Contact insurance company immediately to report the loss. Document all damage with detailed photos and videos from multiple angles. Secure property to prevent additional damage. Make temporary repairs if needed (keep receipts). Create detailed written description of what happened.
⚠️ Important: Prompt reporting is required by most policies. Delays can be used to deny claims.
Days 2-7: Adjuster Inspection
Insurance adjuster visits to inspect damage and determine coverage. They'll ask questions about cause of loss and document damage. Provide factual information only - avoid speculation about cause. Be present during inspection if possible. Ask adjuster about next steps and timeline.
💡 Tip: Take your own photos during adjuster inspection. Get independent estimates for comparison.
Weeks 1-3: Coverage Decision & Offer
Insurance reviews claim and determines if loss is covered. If approved, you'll receive settlement offer. If denied, you'll receive denial letter citing policy language. Initial offers are often lower than actual damage costs. Review settlement details carefully before accepting.
⚠️ Critical: Don't accept first offer without review. Get second opinion on coverage and damage estimates.
Ongoing: Repairs & Supplemental Claims
During repairs, contractors often discover additional damage not visible during initial inspection. File supplemental claims for newly discovered damage with documentation. Keep detailed records of all repair costs. Don't settle final claim until ALL repairs are complete.
💡 Tip: Supplemental claims are common and expected. Document hidden damage before repair/removal.
